Significance of Diwali
Diwali — Deepavali, the "row of lights" — is the most celebrated festival in the Hindu calendar, observed on Amavasya of the Kartik month. It marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana, as recounted in the Ramayana. Across India, it is also the day of Lakshmi Puja — the worship of the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and auspiciousness — performed at night when she is believed to visit clean, illuminated homes.
