About this vrat
Rama Ekadashi (रमा एकादशी) is observed on the Krishna Ekadashi of Kartik month, typically in late October or early November — exactly four days before Diwali. The name 'Rama' refers not to Lord Rama of Ayodhya but to Goddess Rama, an ancient Vedic name for Mahalakshmi. The Brahma Vaivarta Purana records that Rama Ekadashi is uniquely powerful for the dissolution of even the gravest sins (mahapatakas) and for the preparatory consecration of the household for Diwali, when Lakshmi visits.
Many traditional homes use Rama Ekadashi as the day to deeply clean the household, light the first row of diyas at the threshold, and begin the formal preparations for Lakshmi's annual visit. The vrat itself is observed in standard ekadashi form with extra emphasis on Lakshmi-puja: Rama (Lakshmi) is invoked alongside Vishnu, kheer is offered as bhog, lotus flowers are placed before the murti.
Rama Ekadashi — Katha
The legendary story recited as part of the vrat. Read aloud during the morning puja.
The Rama Ekadashi Vrat Katha is the story of King Muchukunda, a great Vaishnava devotee whose daughter Chandrabhaga had married a prince named Shobhana. Chandrabhaga, raised in her father's strict ekadashi-observing household, had observed every ekadashi with full devotion since childhood.
Shobhana, the prince she married, was however of a different temperament — physically weak and unable to bear long fasts. When the first ekadashi after their marriage approached, Shobhana confessed: "I cannot keep an ekadashi fast — my body is too weak; I will collapse before Dwadashi."
Chandrabhaga answered with her father's training: "In this household no member of the family eats on ekadashi. The discipline is older than either of us. If you cannot observe a full nirjala fast, observe a partial fast — fruits, milk only — but you must observe something."
Shobhana attempted the partial fast on the next ekadashi. By Dwadashi morning he could not eat — his body had reached its limit. Within hours, the prince died of weakness brought on by the fast.
Chandrabhaga was distraught. Her father consoled her: "Daughter, your husband died observing an ekadashi vrat. The merit of dying in observance of an ekadashi is profound; he has not been lost; he has been carried somewhere none of us can yet see."
Some years later, while travelling, Chandrabhaga came to the city of Mandarachal. There — to her astonishment — she met Shobhana, alive, prosperous, ruling the city as a king. He embraced her: "Beloved, the ekadashi vrat I died observing for you carried me here. I was placed in a celestial city; I have been a king of this kingdom for years. But the kingdom is not stable — it exists by the merit of my single ekadashi observance, and that merit is finite. Each year a part of it dissolves."
Chandrabhaga said: "I will give you mine. I have observed every ekadashi of my life with full sincerity. I dedicate the merit of all those observances to you — and I will continue observing through the rest of my life and dedicating each one to your stability here."
She did so. The kingdom became eternal; Shobhana eventually rose from it to Vaikuntha. The katha is preserved in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana as proof that the Rama Ekadashi vrat — observed by Chandrabhaga at the centre of this story — has the power to alter even death and to dissolve even the gravest karmic difficulties.

- Light a row of diyas at the threshold. Many traditional homes light the first row of Diwali diyas on Rama Ekadashi evening.
- Maintain the fast through Ekadashi. Standard rules.

Mantras
ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः
Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
Salutations to Maha Lakshmi.
ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya
Salutations to the divine Vasudeva.
Udyapan — The concluding ceremony
Rama Ekadashi is observed annually rather than as a fixed-count vrat. Many devotees mark milestones with: lighting an extra row of diyas at the household threshold on a major Rama Ekadashi, the feeding of eleven brahmins with kheer, and the donation of yellow cloth, lotus flowers, and money to a Vishnu-Lakshmi temple. The merit flows naturally into Diwali four days later.
Frequently asked questions
What is Rama Ekadashi?
Rama Ekadashi is observed on the Krishna Ekadashi of Kartik month — exactly four days before Diwali. The name 'Rama' refers to Goddess Rama (Mahalakshmi, Vishnu's consort), not Lord Rama of Ayodhya. It is uniquely powerful for dissolving the gravest sins (mahapatakas) and preparing the household for Lakshmi's visit at Diwali.
Why is Rama Ekadashi associated with Diwali preparation?
Falling four days before Diwali, Rama Ekadashi serves as the formal spiritual preparation for the festival of lights. Many traditional homes complete their household cleaning by Rama Ekadashi, light the first diyas at the threshold on Rama Ekadashi evening, and consider Lakshmi's grace to be invoked on this day.
What are the mahapatakas that Rama Ekadashi dissolves?
The five mahapatakas (gravest sins) in Hindu tradition are: brahmahatya, surapana (drinking intoxicants), steya (theft), guru-talpa (sexual misconduct toward the guru's family), and association with those who have committed any of the above. Rama Ekadashi is described in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana as having the power to dissolve even these.
Can the merit of Rama Ekadashi be dedicated to a deceased loved one?
Yes — and this is among the most distinctive features. The Chandrabhaga katha establishes that the merit can be formally dedicated through sankalpa to a deceased family member, sustaining them in whatever realm they have reached.
What can I eat during Rama Ekadashi?
Standard ekadashi rules: no grains, no beans, no onion or garlic, no meat or alcohol. Permitted: fruits, milk, sabudana, kuttu, singhare ka atta, boiled potatoes with sendha namak.
When is Rama Ekadashi 2026?
Rama Ekadashi 2026 falls in early November 2026, four days before Diwali (Nov 8, 2026). Verify the exact date with the Daanyam Panchang.
