Significance of Maha Shivaratri
Maha Shivaratri (महा शिवरात्रि, "the great night of Shiva") is observed on the fourteenth day (Chaturdashi) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of Phalguna month. It is the most sacred night of the year for devotees of Lord Shiva, and among the most widely observed festivals across India, Nepal, and the global Hindu diaspora. Unlike most Hindu festivals — celebrated during the day — Maha Shivaratri's worship begins at sunset and continues through the four praharas (three-hour watches) of the night, ending at sunrise.
