How is Holi celebrated?

The legend, drawn from the Bhagavata Purana, is foundational. The asura king Hiranyakashipu — having received a boon that he could not be killed by man, beast, or god, indoors or outdoors, by day or by night — declared himself supreme. His own son Prahlada, however, refused to worship him, instead remaining devoted to Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu attempted many times to kill Prahlada, all unsuccessful. Finally, his sister Holika — who had a boon that fire could not harm her — offered to enter a bonfire with Prahlada in her lap. What seva is auspicious on Holi?

Gau Seva on Holi has roots in the Vrindavan tradition of Krishna playing Holi with cows and gopas in the meadows. Offering green fodder, jaggery, or fresh fruits to a cow on Holi — particularly on Dhulendi morning before the day's play begins — is understood as an offering of joy back to the source of joy. Many traditional families continue the practice of including cows in the Holika Dahan offerings the night before, with grass and gur placed beside the bonfire as a sankalp.

Significance of Holi

Holi (होली) is celebrated on the full moon (Purnima) of Phalguna month and the day after — making it a two-day festival across India and the global Hindu diaspora. The first day (Phalguna Purnima) is Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi: the burning of the bonfire that commemorates the death of the demoness Holika and the protection of her devoted nephew Prahlada. The second day (Chaitra Krishna Pratipada) is Dhulendi or Rangwali Holi: the day of colours, when communities across India play with gulal, abeer, water, and song.
