Significance of Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti marks the northward journey of the sun (Uttarayan) as it transitions into Capricorn (Makar Rashi) — one of the most astronomically significant days in the Hindu calendar. Unlike most Hindu festivals that follow the lunar calendar, Makar Sankranti is a solar festival, observed on January 14 each year (occasionally January 15 due to the leap year cycle).
