Significance of Dussehra (Vijayadashami)

Dussehra (दशहरा) — also Vijayadashami (विजयादशमी), the "tenth day of victory" — is observed on the tenth day (Dashami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Ashwin month, immediately following the nine days of Sharad Navratri. It is among the most widely celebrated festivals across India, marking two great victories from Hindu dharma: Lord Ram's defeat of the demon king Ravana on the battlefield of Lanka (the central narrative of the Ramayana), and Devi Durga's defeat of the buffalo demon Mahishasura after nine days of cosmic battle (the central narrative of the Devi Mahatmya).
