Sade Sati is Saturn's transit across the natal Moon sign and the signs on either side of it. It lasts about seven and a half years. It is not Saturn Mahadasha, and it is not a score. Daanyam names the phases Rising, Peak, and Setting, and dates them from the birth Moon with the Lahiri ayanamsa. This page is the definition. The Sade Sati tool returns your dates.
Definition
Sade Sati, sometimes written Shani Sade Sati, is counted from the sidereal Moon sign, not from the Sun sign and not from Lagna. Saturn in the sign before the natal Moon is the opening of the transit. Saturn in the Moon's own sign is the middle. Saturn in the next sign is the close. People also call these the 12th, 1st, and 2nd from the Moon. That count is not the 12th house from Lagna.
How it works
The Moon's sidereal sign is the only natal point the transit needs. A birth time matters because the Moon can change sign in a few hours. The Vedic Moon sign guide is that sign. This page does not replace it.
Saturn's current sidereal sign is then compared with that Moon sign. The Sade Sati tool does the comparison and prints whether the transit is on, which phase it is, and when that phase ends.
Vimshottari is a different clock. Saturn can be transiting the Moon sign while some other graha rules the Mahadasha. The comparison of those two clocks is on Dasha and transits. This page does not repeat it.

What this page owns, and what it leaves to a tool or another guide.
| Question | Where it is answered |
|---|---|
| What is Sade Sati? | This page. A Saturn transit counted from the natal Moon sign. |
| Am I in it, and when does it end? | The Sade Sati tool. This page does not take a birth and does not print an end date. |
| Which phase is which? | The Sade Sati phases guide. Rising, Peak, and Setting stay on that page. |
| Is this Saturn Mahadasha? | No. Dasha and transits owns that comparison. Saturn Mahadasha is the Vimshottari chapter. |
Worked example
The Moon sign below is the sign Sade Sati would be counted from for this one published birth. The golden does not store a Sade Sati phase, so this page does not invent one. The birth Mahadasha lord is a natal period, not Saturn's transit.
| Birth | Male, born 12 Aug 1995, 14:30 IST, Delhi |
|---|---|
| Date | 1995-08-12 |
| Time | 14:30 |
| Timezone | Asia/Kolkata |
| Lagna | Vrishchika (sidereal Scorpio) |
| Moon sign | Kumbha (sidereal Aquarius) |
| Moon nakshatra | Shatabhisha |
| Birth Mahadasha lord | Rahu |
| Lahiri ayanamsa | 23.798597° |
A common confusion
A Saturn chapter in Vimshottari can feel like the same event as Sade Sati. They use different inputs. Sade Sati uses Saturn's sign now and the natal Moon sign. Saturn Mahadasha uses the dasha sequence from the birth nakshatra.
Calculate it
The Sade Sati tool returns the phase and the end date. The Moon sign calculator returns the sidereal Moon if that is the only placement you need. This guide does not embed a form.
How the numbers are computed
Both tools use the Lahiri sidereal zodiac. The method page records the ephemeris. This page does not merge a transit result with a Mahadasha into one score.
Questions
What is Sade Sati?
It is Saturn's transit through the sign before the natal Moon, the Moon's own sign, and the sign after it. Daanyam calculates it in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Sade Sati tool prints the dates.
What is Shani Sade Sati?
The same transit. Shani is Saturn. The name is not a second method and not Saturn Mahadasha.
Does this page tell me if I am in Sade Sati?
No. The worked example is one published birth, and its Moon sign is not a phase for you. Use the Sade Sati tool with your date, time, and place.
