Sade Sati is calculated from two sidereal signs. The first is the Moon's sign at birth. The second is Saturn's sign now. Saturn in the sign before the Moon is Rising, Saturn in the Moon's sign is Peak, and Saturn in the next sign is Setting. Daanyam uses the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Sade Sati tool dates the phase. This page is only the method.
Definition
The count is whole signs from the natal Moon, not degrees inside a house from Lagna. Move one sign back from the Moon for the opening, stay on the Moon's sign for the middle, and move one sign forward for the close. Each of those signs is one phase. Saturn's stay in a sign is roughly two and a half years, so the three signs together are about seven and a half years. Retrograde motion can make Saturn leave a sign and return. That return is another segment of the same phase, not a new Sade Sati.
How it works
Birth date, time, and place fix the sidereal Moon sign. Without a time, the Moon sign can be the neighbouring sign. The Moon sign calculator is that step.
Saturn's sidereal position on the date you ask about is compared with that Moon sign. The tool uses the same Lahiri zodiac as the rest of Daanyam. It does not start a Mahadasha.
The result is a phase name and dates. It is not a statement that Saturn Mahadasha is running. The length table of Vimshottari stays on the Vimshottari guide.
Reference
The three comparisons. Dates come from the tool, not from this table.
| Saturn's sign relative to the natal Moon | Phase name |
|---|---|
| One sign before the Moon | Rising. Often called the 12th from the Moon. |
| The Moon's own sign | Peak. Often called the 1st from the Moon. |
| One sign after the Moon | Setting. Often called the 2nd from the Moon. |
Worked example
The Moon sign in the worked example is the only Sade Sati input this golden stores. Saturn's sign on that birthday is not part of the fixture, so this page does not invent a phase or an end date.
| Birth | Male, born 12 Aug 1995, 14:30 IST, Delhi |
|---|---|
| Date | 1995-08-12 |
| Time | 14:30 |
| Timezone | Asia/Kolkata |
| Lagna | Vrishchika (sidereal Scorpio) |
| Moon sign | Kumbha (sidereal Aquarius) |
| Moon nakshatra | Shatabhisha |
| Birth Mahadasha lord | Rahu |
| Lahiri ayanamsa | 23.798597° |
A common confusion
Counting houses from Lagna will not reproduce Sade Sati. The 12th house from the Ascendant is a different place from the sign before the natal Moon. Use the Moon sign.
Calculate it
The Sade Sati tool applies this method to a birth and returns the phase and the end date. The Moon sign calculator stops at the Moon. This guide does not embed a form.
How the numbers are computed
Sign boundaries follow Lahiri, recorded on the method page. Phase segments follow Saturn's sidereal ingress, including a return after retrograde as the same phase.
Questions
How is Sade Sati calculated?
From the sidereal Moon sign at birth and Saturn's sidereal sign. The sign before the Moon, the Moon's sign, and the sign after it are the three phases. Daanyam uses the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Sade Sati tool prints the dates.
Why does birth time matter?
The Moon can change sign within a day. A wrong Moon sign shifts every phase. The calculator uses the time and place you enter.
Does the calculation include Saturn Mahadasha?
No. Mahadasha comes from the Moon's nakshatra and the Vimshottari sequence. Sade Sati comes from Saturn's sign now. They are separate tools.
