How is Nirjala Ekadashi celebrated?

The vrat is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi after Bhima, the second of the Pandava brothers. The Padma Purana records that Bhima — unable to fast because of his great hunger — sought a single ekadashi that would substitute for all the others. Sage Vyasa prescribed Nirjala Ekadashi: one waterless day in Jyeshtha, the hottest month of the year, in exchange for a year's worth of merit. Bhima observed it, and so do millions of devotees today, especially in North India.

What seva is auspicious on Nirjala Ekadashi?

Gau Seva on Nirjala Ekadashi is among the most powerful daans one can offer. The Skanda Purana explicitly recommends giving water and fodder to cows on this day — for the cow, like the devotee, suffers the heat of Jyeshtha, and any seva that relieves her thirst on Nirjala Ekadashi is said to carry the merit of feeding a thousand brahmins. Offering palak (green fodder) and water to cows on this day is considered ideal, both for its compassion in the heat and for its alignment with the vrat's spirit of restraint and care.

Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Jyeshtha month and is considered the most rigorous — and most rewarding — of all 24 ekadashi vrats in the Hindu calendar. Nirjala literally means "without water": the vrat is observed from sunrise of Ekadashi to sunrise of Dwadashi without consuming even a drop of water. Tradition holds that fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi alone confers the merit of fasting on all 24 ekadashis of the year.
