Significance of Ganga Dussehra

Ganga Dussehra (गंगा दशहरा) is observed on the tenth day (Dashami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Jyeshtha month. It commemorates the descent of the Ganga from the heavens to the earth — the moment Goddess Ganga finally agreed to come down to relieve the suffering of King Bhagiratha's ancestors, a journey requiring Lord Shiva himself to break her cosmic fall in his matted locks. The Vayu Purana, Skanda Purana, and Brahmanda Purana all record this episode; Ganga Dussehra is the day this descent is honoured across northern India, particularly along the Ganga's path — Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna, and on into Bengal.
