In Western astrology, you are your sun sign. In Vedic astrology, you are your Nakshatra.
Your Nakshatra — the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at the moment you were born — is the most intimate, personal layer of your Jyotish chart. It shapes your emotional patterns, the quality of your attention, the texture of your relationships, and the karmic thread that runs beneath your life story.
Most people who know something about Vedic astrology know their Rashi (moon sign). Far fewer know their Nakshatra. This guide changes that.
What Is a Nakshatra?
The word Nakshatra comes from Sanskrit: naksha (map or sketch) and tra(to approach or guard). The Nakshatras are 27 lunar mansions — equal segments of the zodiac, each spanning 13° 20' of arc — that the Moon moves through over the course of its monthly cycle.
While the Sun takes a full year to move through the zodiac, the Moon completes its journey in just 27–28 days. Ancient Vedic astronomers divided the sky into 27 stations — one for each day of the Moon's journey — and observed that people born under each station shared recognisable qualities.
These are the Nakshatras. They are not stars themselves, but regions of sky anchored by a prominent star or star cluster (called the Yogatara, the junction star).
Nakshatra vs Rashi: What's the Difference?
Your Rashi (moon sign) is one of 12 zodiac signs, each covering 30° of the zodiac. Your Nakshatrais one of 27 lunar mansions, each covering 13° 20'. The Nakshatra is a finer, more precise division.
Think of it this way: if your Rashi is the city you live in, your Nakshatra is the specific neighbourhood — the character of the streets, the quality of light, the particular flavour of daily life.
How to Find Your Nakshatra
Your Nakshatra is determined by the precise position of the Moon at your birth — which means you need your date, time, and place of birth to calculate it accurately.
If your birth time is off by more than a few hours, the Moon may have moved into a different Nakshatra. This is especially important because the Moon spends only about 24 hours in each Nakshatra.

Why Your Nakshatra Matters
1. Personality and Emotional Nature
The Nakshatra of your Moon is the most precise indicator of your emotional instincts — how you process feeling, what soothes you, what agitates you. A Rohini Moon experiences beauty and comfort as a deep need. An Ardra Moon is comfortable with intensity and is often processing transformation. A Pushya Moon is genuinely nourished by service and stability.
2. Dasha Sequence
Your birth Nakshatra determines the starting point of your Vimshottari Dasha sequence. Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of nine planets, and that planet's Mahadasha is where your life journey begins.
See What is Mahadasha? for a full explanation of the dasha system.
3. Muhurat and Auspicious Timing
In Vedic tradition, the Nakshatra of the day interacts with your birth Nakshatra to determine the quality of timing. Certain combinations are considered auspicious for particular activities — starting a business, getting married, signing agreements, making journeys.
This is the basis of the Panchang, the Vedic almanac. The Nakshatra is one of the five limbs (Pancha Anga) that make each day unique.

4. Compatibility
Nakshatra compatibility (called Ashtakoota Milan) is the traditional basis for evaluating marriage compatibility in Vedic astrology. It examines 8 different compatibility factors, of which the Nakshatra comparison is central.

Three Nakshatras to Know in Depth
Rohini — The Star of Ascent
Rohini is the Moon's favourite Nakshatra — it is said to be where the Moon is most comfortable, most fertile, most expressive. People with a Rohini Moon have a natural magnetism and a deep love of beauty in all its forms: art, food, sensory experience, comfort. The challenge is possessiveness — Rohini holds on tightly.
Ashwini — The Star of Beginnings
The first Nakshatra, Ashwini is ruled by Ketu and associated with the Ashwini Kumars — the divine physicians of Vedic mythology. People born under Ashwini are known for speed, initiative, and healing ability. They arrive before others, begin before they are ready, and trust momentum over preparation.
Ardra — The Star of the Storm
Ardra means "moist" or "fresh" — the freshness after a storm has broken. Ruled by Rahu and associated with Rudra (the storm-form of Shiva), Ardra carries the energy of grief transforming into renewal. People with an Ardra Moon often carry a quality of emotional rawness alongside intellectual brilliance.
Nakshatra and Spiritual Practice
In Vedic tradition, each Nakshatra has its own presiding deity, associated mantra, and recommended ritual practice. Many families maintain a tradition of worshipping the deity of their birth Nakshatra, particularly on the days when the Moon transits that Nakshatra each month.
This monthly recurrence — called the Janma Nakshatra tithi — is considered particularly auspicious for:
- Offering puja to the Nakshatra deity
- Performing seva connected to the ruling planet
- Beginning new ventures aligned with the Nakshatra's qualities
Your Nakshatra is not a fixed fate. It is a precise description of the energetic quality you arrived with — the particular way you receive and process life. Knowing it is one of the most clarifying things Jyotish can offer.
