What Is Mangala Gauri Vrat?
Mangala Gauri Vrat (मंगला गौरी व्रत) is a sacred Tuesday fast observed during the month of Sawan (Shravan), dedicated to Mata Parvati in her form as Mangala Gauri — the goddess of marital auspiciousness. In 2026, Mangala Gauri Vrat falls on four Tuesdays in Sawan: August 4, 11, 18, and 25 for North Indian states (Purnimanta calendar), and August 18, 25, September 1, and 8 for Maharashtra, Gujarat, and South Indian states (Amanta calendar). The vrat is observed primarily by married and newly married women seeking conjugal bliss, the long life of their husband, and the blessing of children.
Mangala Gauri is one of the most cherished women's vrats in the Hindu calendar. While Sawan Somwar honours Lord Shiva through Monday fasting, Mangala Gauri turns the devotion to his consort — Mata Parvati as Gauri, the one who blesses the household. The word Mangala means auspicious, and Gauri is Parvati's radiant, golden-complexioned form. Together, Mangala Gauri represents the divine feminine energy that protects and nourishes married life.
When Is Mangala Gauri Vrat in 2026?
The dates differ depending on which lunar calendar your region follows. North Indian states follow the Purnimanta calendar, where Shravana begins about fifteen days earlier than the Amanta calendar used in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and most of South India. Both calendars have four Mangala Gauri Tuesdays in 2026.

Mangala Gauri Vrat GuideHow to Do Mangala Gauri Puja? (Step-by-Step Vidhi)
The puja follows a traditional Shodashopachar (sixteen-offering) format. Here is the step-by-step vidhi:
- Snan and sankalp — Wake before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean clothes (preferably red or green). Take a sankalp (vow) to observe the fast with devotion to Mangala Gauri.
- Prepare the puja sthana — Clean a chowki or wooden plank and spread a fresh red or white cloth. Place a kalash (water pot) filled with water, mango leaves, and a coconut on top.
- Install Mangala Gauri — Place a murti, photo, or clay image of Mata Parvati (Mangala Gauri) on the chowki. Some traditions use a Mangala Gauri yantra instead.
- Ganesh puja — Begin by invoking Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles from the vrat.
- Shodashopachara — Offer sixteen items of each prescribed offering: sixteen flowers, sixteen pieces of fruit, sixteen sweets, sixteen betel nuts, sixteen bangles. The number sixteen is central to Mangala Gauri worship.
- Abhishek — Bathe the murti with water, milk, curd, honey, and ghee (panchamrit). Apply sindoor, haldi, and chandan.
- Shringar — Offer red chunri (cloth), bangles, bindi, alta (red dye), mirror, comb, and suhag items to the goddess.
- Dhoop-deep — Light incense and a ghee lamp. Offer dhoop of guggul or loban.
- Katha and mantra — Recite the Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha with full attention. Chant the Mangala Gauri mantra 16 or 108 times.
- Aarti and prasad — Perform aarti with the Parvati Mata Aarti. Distribute prasad to suhagans (married women) and seek blessings from elders.
What Are the Rules (Niyam) of Mangala Gauri Vrat?
- Observe a nirjala or phalahar fast — only fruits, milk, and sattvik food are permitted. Some women keep a complete waterless fast until the evening puja.
- Wear red, green, or yellow clothing — these are Gauri's colours and considered auspicious for the vrat.
- Avoid onion, garlic, grains, and tamasik food throughout the day.
- The vrat should ideally begin from the first Sawan after marriage. The tradition prescribes continuing for five consecutive Sawan seasons (i.e., five years).
- The puja must be performed before sunset. Evening is the ideal time.
- Do not break the fast before completing the katha and aarti.
- On the following morning, the clay image of Gauri (if used) is immersed in water or placed respectfully at a sacred spot.

Sawan Somwar 2026 DatesMangala Gauri Vrat Katha (Story in Brief)
The Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha tells the story of a wealthy merchant named Dharmapala and his wife. Despite their prosperity, the couple remained childless for many years. They had observed every vrat, visited every tirtha, and given every kind of daan — yet no child came. Dharmapala grew despondent.
One day, a learned brahmani visited their home and advised the wife: "Observe Mangala Gauri Vrat for five consecutive Sawan seasons — every Tuesday of every Sawan, for five years. Worship Mata Parvati as Mangala Gauri. Make sixteen offerings of every prescribed item. Recite her katha. After five years, perform the udyapan, and Mata Parvati will not refuse what you ask."
The wife observed the vrat with sincere devotion. She fasted every Sawan Tuesday, offered shodashopachara puja, and recited the katha without fail. After five years, she performed the grand udyapan — feeding sixteen brahmins, honouring sixteen suhagans, and making daan of sixteen prescribed items to the Devi temple. Soon after, she was blessed with a virtuous son. The boy grew into a wise, prosperous young man, and the household became known as a place where the goddess's grace had visibly entered.
The katha affirms that Mangala Gauri's grace, once received, protects across generations — shielding the family from untimely fate and nourishing dharma in the household.
What Mantra to Chant During Mangala Gauri Puja?
The primary Mangala Gauri mantra is chanted 16 or 108 times during the puja. Sit facing east or north, hold a rudraksha or sphatik mala, and chant with a calm mind:
Om Hreem Shreem Mangala Gauri Devyai Namah
— Mangala Gauri Beej Mantra
For the aarti, the widely recited Sarva Mangala Mangalye shloka is essential:
Sarva Mangala Mangalye Shive Sarvartha Sadhike · Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Narayani Namostute
— Devi Stuti (Durga Saptashati)
This shloka honours Gauri as the embodiment of all that is auspicious and the fulfiller of all righteous desires.
How Many Years Is Mangala Gauri Vrat Observed?
The tradition prescribes observing Mangala Gauri Vrat for five consecutive Sawan seasons (five years), beginning from the first Sawan after marriage. Each year, the woman fasts on all four (or five) Tuesdays of Sawan and performs the full puja with shodashopachara.
In the fifth and final year, the vrat concludes with a grand ceremony called udyapan (उद्यापन). During udyapan, sixteen brahmins are fed, sixteen suhagans are honoured with suhag items, and sixteen of every prescribed offering is given as daan. This makes Mangala Gauri among the longest women's vrats in the Hindu calendar — a five-year commitment of devotion, discipline, and faith.
Women who are unable to complete the full five years may observe for a shorter period with a modified udyapan, but the traditional five-year observance is considered most meritorious.
Why Is Mangala Gauri Vrat Important for Newly Married Women?
Mangala Gauri Vrat holds special significance for navavivaahita (newly married women). Mata Parvati herself performed tapasya to attain Lord Shiva as her husband — and in her Mangala Gauri form, she is the living proof that devoted seeking bears fruit. Newly married women observe this vrat to seek Gauri's blessing for harmony with their husband, the protection of their suhag, and the blessing of healthy children.
In many communities — particularly in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka — the first Sawan after marriage is considered the most auspicious time to begin the vrat. The bride's maternal home (maika) often sends shringar items, sweets, and puja samagri as gifts for the Mangala Gauri celebrations, making it both a spiritual and a family occasion.
