What is moon nakshatra?
The 360° zodiac is divided into 27 lunar mansions called nakshatras, each spanning 13°20'. The Moon completes one full traversal of the zodiac in roughly 27.3 days — moving through one nakshatra every 24 hours or so. The lunar mansion the Moon is occupying at your moment of birth is your moon nakshatra, also called Janma Nakshatra (birth star) or Chandra Nakshatra.
Your moon nakshatra is one of the three most important factors in Vedic astrology — used to determine your Vimshottari Mahadasha sequence, your auspicious name (naamkaran), guna milan compatibility with a partner, and the muhurat alignment for important rituals. For many traditional astrologers, moon nakshatra is a more precise identity marker than the Western sun sign.

Frequently asked questions
What is moon nakshatra?
Your moon nakshatra (Janma Nakshatra or birth star) is the lunar mansion the Moon was occupying at the exact moment of your birth. There are 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13°20' of the zodiac. Your moon nakshatra is determined by the Moon's longitude — not the Sun's — which is why it is also called Chandra Nakshatra. In Vedic astrology, the moon nakshatra shapes your emotional nature, instinctive responses, name (naamkaran), and the running Vimshottari Dasha at any given point in your life.
How is moon nakshatra calculated?
Moon nakshatra is calculated by computing the Moon's sidereal longitude at the exact moment of birth (using birth date, birth time, and birth place — latitude, longitude, and timezone). The 360° zodiac is divided into 27 equal segments of 13°20'. Whichever segment the Moon's sidereal longitude falls into is your nakshatra. Daanyam uses swisseph (the Swiss Ephemeris library) for this computation — the same engine used in professional Vedic astrology software.
Why is moon nakshatra important?
Moon nakshatra is one of the three most important factors in Vedic astrology — alongside ascendant (Lagna) and moon sign (Rashi). It is used to: (1) determine your Vimshottari Mahadasha sequence; (2) find your auspicious name (naamkaran); (3) match compatibility with a partner (guna milan); (4) choose muhurat for important events; and (5) understand your innate emotional and karmic patterns. Many traditional astrologers consider moon nakshatra a more accurate identity than the western sun sign.
What are the 27 nakshatras?
The 27 nakshatras in order are: Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashirsha, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati. Each is ruled by one of nine planets (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury) in a repeating cycle of three.
What is nakshatra pada?
Each nakshatra is divided into four padas (quarters), each spanning 3°20'. The pada determines the navamsha sign your moon is in, which is critical for finer-grained chart analysis and for guna milan compatibility (specifically the Yoni and Nadi koots are pada-sensitive).
Is moon nakshatra the same as birth star?
Yes. Moon nakshatra, Janma nakshatra, birth star, and Chandra nakshatra all refer to the same thing — the lunar mansion occupied by the Moon at your birth.
