What Is a Nakshatra?
In Vedic astrology, the ecliptic is divided into 27 Nakṣatras, each spanning 13°20' of sky. The Moon takes about a day to cross each one, and the Nakṣatra holding your Moon at birth is your Janma Nakṣatra — your birth star. The Nakṣatra you carry is more personally revealing than your Sun sign because the Moon governs the mind, emotions, and inner life in the Vedic system. Your Nakṣatra also sets your Mahādaśā sequence — the order of planetary periods that will unfold across your life.
What Your Birth Nakshatra Reveals
A complete Nakṣatra reading on Daanyam shows you:
- Nakṣatra name — for example, Rohiṇī, Aśvinī, Anurādhā, Citrā
- Pāda (quarter) — your Nakṣatra is divided into four pādas; each carries a different sub-rāśi and personality flavour
- Ruling planet (Nakṣatra Lord) — the Daśā lord whose Mahādaśā you began life inside
- Presiding deity (Devatā) — the cosmic intelligence behind the Nakṣatra (Brahmā, Agni, Indra, Yama, and others)
- Symbol and Yoni — animal nature, often used in Aṣṭakūṭa compatibility
- Gana — divine, human, or rākṣasa temperament classification
- Personality and life themes — strengths, blind spots, suitable career paths
- Mantras and remedies — the ruling deity's mantra and recommended seva
For example, someone born under Rohiṇī (ruled by the Moon, deity Brahmā) tends to be magnetic, sensuous, and creative, with a strong relationship to beauty and growth. Someone born under Mūla (ruled by Ketu, deity Nirṛti) carries deep intensity, often unearthing root truths through difficult passages.
Why Time and Place Matter
The Moon moves through the sky at roughly one degree every two hours. That means a four-to-five-hour difference in birth time can shift you into a different Nakṣatra entirely — and a different pāda within a Nakṣatra changes every six minutes. Exact birth time is essential for an accurate reading. Place matters too, because Daanyam computes the Moon's position relative to your local time and geography using the Swiss Ephemeris.
If you only know an approximate time, the calculator will still return a result, but consider it provisional until you can confirm your birth time from a hospital record or birth certificate.
