Fremont Panchang

Fremont has the highest Indian-origin share of any sizeable American city — roughly a quarter of residents — and it shows in the ordinary week rather than the festival calendar: Mission San Jose grocery aisles stocked for Ekadashi phalahar, Ardenwood driveways full for a Saturday satyanarayan katha. The Hindu Community and Cultural Center on Delaware Drive is the East Bay's main complex, and ISKCON Silicon Valley is ten minutes away in Newark. Two calendars circulate in most homes here — a Gujarati or Telugu one posted from India, and the Fremont sunrise. For a vrat kept in Fremont only the second one governs, and in August they disagree by a full civil date.

Pacific Time with DST, same switch dates as the rest of California. One local quirk worth knowing: Mission Peak stands directly east of the city, so the sun a Fremont household actually sees clears the ridge several minutes after the computed horizon sunrise on this page. Temple boards along Mission Boulevard sometimes post the observed time instead — both are defensible; pick one and stay with it for the whole vrat.
