Read a Vedic birth chart in a fixed order. Start with Lagna, the sidereal rising sign. Then the Moon and its nakshatra. Then the twelve houses counted from Lagna. Then the nine grahas. Then Vimshottari Dasha, which times the chart from that nakshatra. This page is only that sequence. The Vedic birth chart page is where Daanyam opens your chart.
Definition
A Vedic birth chart, or Kundli, is the sidereal map. How to read it is the order of attention, not a second definition of the chart. Each step below has its own guide. This page does not repeat the twelve-house table, the nine-graha table, or the ayanamsa arithmetic.
How it works
Lagna needs a birth time. It starts the houses. Without it, a list of signs is not yet a house reading.
The Moon's rashi is the Vedic Moon sign. The Moon's nakshatra is the birth star inside the signs. Sade Sati uses the rashi. Vimshottari starts from the nakshatra.
Grahas in signs, and those signs as houses from Lagna, are the natal picture. Dasha says which graha's period is running. A transit, such as Sade Sati, is a later question.
Stop there before career or marriage timing. Those guides apply the 10th house and the dasha. They are not step one.
Reference
The order. Each row points at the guide that holds the detail.
| Step | Look at | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lagna, the sidereal Ascendant. | Lagna |
| 2 | Moon sign and nakshatra. | Vedic Moon sign, Nakshatras |
| 3 | Twelve whole-sign houses from Lagna. | The twelve houses |
| 4 | Nine grahas, not their Mahadasha pages. | The nine grahas |
| 5 | Vimshottari, then the sub-period. | Vimshottari, Antardasha |
Worked example
The golden birth can illustrate the first two steps only. Lagna and the Moon sign are printed below, with the Moon's nakshatra and the birth Mahadasha lord. The Sun's rashi and the other grahas are not on this fixture, so they are not filled in.

A common confusion
This is not the page that calculates a chart, and it is not a promise about career or marriage. 'What is a Vedic birth chart' is the doorway page. 'How to read' is the order you use after the chart exists.
Calculate it
Open the Vedic birth chart page when you want the order applied to your birth. Sun, Moon, and Rising is enough if you only need the three placements.
How the numbers are computed
Every step uses the same Lahiri engine. The method page says what that engine computes and what it leaves out.
Questions
How do I read a Vedic birth chart?
Lagna first, then the Moon and its nakshatra, then the houses from Lagna, then the nine grahas, then Vimshottari Dasha. Daanyam's Vedic birth chart page opens that chart. This page only keeps the order.
What is the difference between a Vedic birth chart and how to read one?
The chart is the calculated Kundli. Reading it is the sequence above. The chart page is the tool doorway. This guide does not replace it.
Do I need the Sun sign before Lagna?
No. The sidereal Sun is one graha among nine. Lagna is the start of the houses, so it comes first. Sun, Moon, and Rising can show all three once you have a time and place.
