About this vrat
Jaya Ekadashi (जया एकादशी) is observed on the Shukla Ekadashi of Magha month, typically January or February. The Padma Purana describes the vrat as uniquely powerful for the release of beings who have been transformed by curses into lower forms (rakshasa, pisacha, preta) — and for the lifting of any condition of bondage that has reduced a being from their natural form. The katha tells of a gandharva couple cursed into ghost-form and released through this vrat.
The vrat is observed in the standard ekadashi pattern with particular focus on Vishnu's transformative grace — the grace that restores forms.
Jaya Ekadashi — Katha
The legendary story recited as part of the vrat. Read aloud during the morning puja.
The Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha is the story of Pushpavati and her husband Malyavan, a gandharva couple who served in Indra's court. They were among the most beautiful beings in the heavens. One day, while performing in Indra's court — Malyavan singing, Pushpavati dancing — the two gandharvas, lost in their love for each other, exchanged glances of such intensity that they faltered in the performance. The court erupted in laughter; Indra, embarrassed, was furious.
He cursed them: "For this distraction in my court, the two of you shall fall to earth as pisachas (ghost-spirits) — sustained by hunger, deprived of beauty, unable to be together. The curse will lift only when you find a vrat that addresses your bondage."
Malyavan and Pushpavati fell to earth as pisachas. They wandered in the forests, hungry and hideous, separated through dense undergrowth they could not cross. They wandered for years. By accident — on the Magha Shukla Ekadashi — both Malyavan and Pushpavati came, separately, to a small Vishnu temple at the edge of a forest. The cold of the night and the hunger of their pisacha state kept them awake; they observed, without knowing, the night-long Vishnu vigil that the Magha Shukla Ekadashi traditionally involves.
By dawn, the curse had begun to lift. By noon Dwadashi, both had returned to their gandharva forms. They found each other; they returned to Indra's court; Indra, seeing the curse self-dissolved through the ekadashi merit, welcomed them back without further punishment.
The katha closes with the affirmation that Jaya Ekadashi has the unique power to release beings from curses that have transformed them — and, by extension, to lift any condition of bondage in human life.

Frequently asked questions
What is Jaya Ekadashi?
Jaya Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Ekadashi of Magha month — typically January or February. The Padma Purana describes it as uniquely powerful for the release of beings cursed into lower forms (pisacha, preta) and for lifting conditions of bondage in human life.
Can Jaya Ekadashi help with curses?
The Pushpavati-Malyavan katha specifically describes the vrat releasing a gandharva couple from a pisacha curse. The vrat is observed by those who feel afflicted by curses or by patterns of bondage that ordinary remedies have not lifted.
Why is the night-long vigil emphasised in Jaya Ekadashi?
Per the katha, the gandharva couple accidentally observed the Jaya Ekadashi by being kept awake through the night by cold and hunger. Tradition emphasises the night-long jagaran in commemoration; many strict observers stay awake through the entire Ekadashi night reciting Vishnu's name.
When is Jaya Ekadashi 2026?
Jaya Ekadashi 2026 falls in late January 2026. Verify with the Daanyam Panchang.
What is the difference between Jaya Ekadashi and Vijaya Ekadashi?
Both are 'victory' ekadashis. Jaya Ekadashi (Magha Shukla) is for release from curses and bondage. Vijaya Ekadashi (Phalguna Krishna) is for victory over external opposition and difficult undertakings — the ekadashi Lord Rama observed before crossing to Lanka. The two work on different planes of difficulty.
What can I eat during Jaya Ekadashi?
Standard ekadashi rules: no grains, no beans, no onion or garlic. Fruits, milk, sabudana, kuttu, singhare ka atta, boiled potatoes with sendha namak. Strict observers fast nirjala.
